We were driven to a nearby non-touristy, traditional Egyptian neighbourhood where Karen, Michel and I rapidly got out of the van for our much anticipated ‘walking tour’ through the markets or ‘souks’ as they call them in Arabic. The roads and pathways were uneven and sometimes muddy being shadowed by very old, deteriorated and dirty buildings. Piles of garbage were part of the picture having been disposed of here and there surrounding the buildings. Regardless, the local merchants were all very much friendly, with huge smiles on their faces as they welcomed us into their shops or offered us tea as Karen fluently spoke Arabic to them all. At the end of the market, an area known as the tentmakers bazaar was reached where skilled artists were hand stitching
